And what a day it was for the children, parents and Team Mirra! Thank you Janani, Krithika, Aunty (the Mom Baker) and the whole team at STEP 126. The experience is unforgettable and your personal touch made it unbelievable for all of us.
A student volunteer who was part of this experience narrates the experience . .
“On the sunny Sunday of 23rd September, the children of Mirra accompanied by their parents arrived at STEPS for a day of joyful activities. This plot of 2 acres, located in Sithallapakkam, Chennai, is a haven of fun and engagement for kids and adults.
A tour of the place was given by its members when we arrived, which left us in excitement for the upcoming activities. This area contains a herb garden, a playground, two sheds and a mini forest (in the making). The children were first guided over to the play area where they each explored the task in front of them. Some equipment included climbing on ropes, walking on a single rope, walking on suspended logs and balancing on a slab of wood. The activities were performed by the children with a lot of zeal! They each took their time on the equipment and explored it enough before proceeding to the next.
Amidst the proceedings of these ventures, we were introduced to the friendly golden retriever; ‘Summer’. This darling dog won the hearts of most of the children and accompanied them around the place. Some children who were hesitant to befriend the dog at first, concluded it as their soul companion towards the end of the program.
The seed ball making activity let the children dirty their hands completely; they had fun moulding the mud into balls and pressing the seed into it. The next activity consisted of us filling a coconut shell with soil and loosening the top of it to add some mustard seeds. The soil was then wetted by sprinkling water on it. We were offered to take it home and send the organizers pictures of the growing shoots, which all of us promised to fulfil.
Before snack break, the children were given a chance to ice two cupcakes with icing bags and finish them with sprinklers. Children chose the icing of their choice and piped it on the cupcake to their hearts content. A scrumptious snack was provided to finish the day.
The parents seemed to interact more with each other as their children were independently engaged in their respective activities. Many parents got to know each other after a long time and a lot of laughs and selfies were observed.
A final group picture was taken to honour this occasion.
Before departing from S.T.E.P.S we were each given a paper bag consisting of the seed balls we made and we were suggested to throw them over barren lands for the natural growth of these seeds in the upcoming monsoons. This memory will forever be etched in the minds of the young ones. Recollections of this adventure will surely bring us back to S.T.E.P.S.
